Most of us learned as kids that sweets like chocolate are bad for your teeth. Even if this is still true for some kinds of our favorite sweet snack, we don’t have to stop serving it all together. Recent tests have found that dark chocolate, which has a lot of cocoa in it, may actually be good for your teeth. Dr. Motiwala wants you to know the facts so that sweet-toothed people can safely fill their cravings.
How Does It Work?
People know that dark chocolate has a lot of antioxidants, which help our bodies fight off germs and diseases. Up to four times as many antioxidants can be found in dark chocolate as in green tea. Antioxidants that are found in high amounts in saliva have been shown to help fight gum disease and slow tooth damage.
What About the Sugar?
Sugar is bad for your teeth, and chocolate does have sugar in it. But that’s why we suggest dark chocolate, which has less sugar and more cocoa (at least 70%). Dark chocolate has a lot of antibacterial compounds that cancel out the effects of the sugars, making it a safe choice for people with a sweet taste. In fact, research has shown that one of these substances fights cavities better than fluoride.
Can I Skip Brushing My Teeth at Night?
Absolutely…NOT! Even dark chocolate has some sugar, and even though some of its magical chemicals help fight tooth decay, there is no substitute for brushing and flossing your teeth at least twice a day and getting your teeth checked every six months. But we hope that we’ve helped people get over their fear, guilt, and dislike of chocolate when it comes to mouth health. Good news for chocolate fans!
