The Good & the Bad of the Crossbite

The Good & the Bad of the Crossbite

Crossbite happens when your teeth or mouth don’t fit together well. Dr. Motiwala tells you more about this problem, what it does, and how to treat it.

A Good Bite

In a dream world, your teeth would all be straight, and your upper jaw would rest nicely on top of and just in front of your lower jaw. Of course, this doesn’t always happen. Some people have crooked or bent teeth, and sometimes the top jaw doesn’t fit well on the bottom jaw. The way your teeth and mouth fit together is called your “bite.” When doctors talk about this, they use the word “occlusion.” It’s called “malocclusion” when your bite or teeth don’t fit together right. Crossbite is a type of misalignment.

A Bad Bite

It is thought that one out of every five people has some kind of bad bite. When you have malocclusion, you can have:

  • When your lower jaw sticks out far in front of your upper jaw, this is called an underbite.
  • Overbite is a condition in which your upper jaw sticks out far in front of your lower mouth.
  • Crossbite is when your teeth or arches aren’t lined up straight front to back, but instead side to side.

Each of these bite problems can hurt your mouth and your health as a whole. This problem can be caused by:

  • A mismatch in size of jaw and teeth
  • Sucking a thumb or pacifier too long
  • Baby teeth taking too long to fall out
  • Early loss of adult teeth
  • Effects of Crossbite

When your teeth don’t fit together right, it can lead to a lot of different problems. Some bad bite effects are:

  • Tooth decay
  • Gum disease
  • Grinding down tooth enamel
  • Jaw pain or TMJ/TMD
  • Asymmetrical smile and facial features
  • Chronic headaches and migraines

All of these side effects can get worse over time and put your health and quality of life at real risk. This is why it is important to treat malocclusion as soon as possible.

How to Treat a Crossbite

The best time to fix your bite is when you are young, before your mouth is done growing. However, if you have a crossbite, you can and should see a dentist at any age. Crossbites can take a long time to fix because your mouth is a complex system with a lot of parts. Depending on your unique situation and how bad the crossbite is, your dentist may suggest:

  • Wearing an expander
  • Oral surgery
  • Orthodontics

Your crossbite can only be diagnosed and fixed by a trained dentist. It’s always a good idea to see your dentist if your bite is hurting you for any reason.
